We at Renewal Ministries recently received an email asking if we knew of any solid materials on the New Evangelization for children.

Later that day, we received an email from Anita Houghton, informing us of her new resource for children on evengelization, called Kerygma 4 Kids.

The timing couldn’t have been better! After talking with Ralph Martin, and learning about Anita’s excellent credentials, as well as reviewing information about the material online, we were happy to recommend Kerygma 4 Kids to the writer of the first email.

Ralph Martin is very familiar with Anita. She is a regional coordinator of catechetical programming and formation in the Office of Evangelization and Catechesis in the Archdiocese of Detroit, providing formation and training to lay ministers and catechists, particularly in the area of evangelization. She also is a part-time faculty member at Sacred Heart Major Seminary in Detroit, Michigan, teaching courses in Sacred Scripture.

“I wrote Kerygma 4 Kids, because I was inspired by the call to the New Evangelization, and I recognized that children need to hear the Good News of Jesus in a compelling way,” said Anita. “As a lay associate of the Companions of the Cross, I was also influenced by the spirituality of the Companions and their zeal for renewal in the Church, as well as the form and format of the Canadian Catholic Outreach (CCO) faith studies that present an environment and method for evangelization of young adults.  I modeled Kerygma 4 Kids after the CCO study Discovery, but adapted each grade-level lesson, for grades K through eight, to the child’s developmental level.”

“As you know, traditional catechetical materials fall short in helping children encounter the living Christ and in proclaiming the kerygma,” she said. “Kerygma 4 Kids meets that need.  I truly believe that we need to not only focus on the evangelization of adults and parents, but need to parallel our efforts by evangelization children.”
