Dear Friends in Christ,

We just learned that the Holy Father has awarded Sister Ann Shields the Benemerenti Medal in recognition for her service to the Church. News of the award was made by the Most Rev. Earl Boyea, Bishop of Lansing, on the Diocese of Lansing website. You will find Sr. Ann’s name, along with other recipients of papal honors, by clicking here. Sister Ann will receive the award in early September at the Cathedral. The final date is yet to be decided. We’ll post more information on our website once it’s available.

The Benemerenti Medal has a long history. It was first given centuries ago as a military award for defense of the Pope. In more recent years, the awarding of the medal has expanded to include other gifts and talents used for the glory of God and the good of his Church. Here at Renewal Ministries, we are so pleased that Sr. Ann’s gifts are giving honor to God and we also rejoice that her gifts are at the service of the New Evangelization. For further information on the medal, as well as a list of its recipients throughout the years, see the following article from Wikipedia, which you will find by clicking here.
