These words, from the worship song Set a Fire, are so relevant to me right now. I always pray at the end of each year that the Lord will give me a word for the upcoming year. This year, my word was “light.” Light has more than one meaning, but one of the definitions is “to ignite,” as in “to light a fire.” I believe the Lord wants that for me in my life, but it’s also something He wants for his Church.

Jesus wants to set the world on fire, and how He wishes it were already blazing! (Lk 12:49) He wants to use each of us to start a fire. It doesn’t have to be a big one—big blazes often start from the smallest of sparks. When we open ourselves to Him, He transforms us and everything around us. If we allow the Lord to spark a fire of love in our hearts through the gift of his Holy Spirit, it can kindle a fire that burns much longer and brighter than we’ll even live to see.

Ask the Lord today to send the Holy Spirit into your heart. Be open to whatever He has planned for you. We can be at peace knowing that his plans for us are so much greater than anything we could plan for ourselves—and they often look very different from what we would expect, in the best way! With the Spouse of the Holy Spirit, our Mother Mary, God will do extraordinary things with even the tiniest souls.
